Description of all the classes and workshops we offer
TRADITIONAL GUINEAN DANCE
Experienced instructors, Mohamed and Marielle offer you an immersion and a rewarding experience in the culture of Guinea, in West Africa. In their dance classes, you will dive into the various traditional rhythms of Guinea and explore the subtleties of each movement of dance. Each class begins with an invigorating warm-up and continues with the theory of dance, followed by the repetition of each diagonal movement on the dance floor.
Whether students in our classes are 5 or 80 years old, experienced dancers or total beginners, we believe that our dance classes provide an unforgettable and valuable cultural experience for all participants!
DUNDUN DANCE
This is an active dance class which involves drumming with sticks on dundun drums whilst dancing around the drum. It is incredibly fun and you don't need to be a dancer or a drummer to do this class. It is also a fantastic class for stress relief, fitness and coordination.
For those of you that have found the African dance class a little too physically challenging, this is the perfect way to indulge your love of African drumming with dance.
We recommend this class to both drumming and dancing students as developing an understanding of the dance to a rhythm is essential to African culture and music.
AFROBEATS DANCE
We are excited to be offering a new style of African dancing often referred to as Afro Beats, Afro House, Afro Pop, Afro Fit, etc! In this one hour class you will learn some awesome dance moves that’ll make you sweat and make you feel happier than when you arrived!
This class is more focused on fitness than choreography and will get you learning some fun hip and sexy moves that'll help you be the life of the party on the dance floor!
KIDS CREATIVE DRUM & DANCE
Children will enjoy discovering and exploring the world of African drumming and dancing in this fun and unique class. Children will learn to sing, move, dance and learn rhythms while promoting self-confidence, multiculturalism, cooperation, improvisation, creativity and musicality.
The first part of the class will be devoted to learning to play traditional Guinean rhythms on instruments such as the djembe, the dundun and the shaker, and the second part will consist of learning energetic dances inspired by traditional dances of Guinea.
INTRO TO GUINEAN DRUMMING
Beginning and intermediate drummers are welcome in this introductory class to Guinean drumming. Students will learn the techniques of West African bass drumming (dundun, sangban and kenkeni drums) and bell patterns, the beginning repertoire of rhythms, and the fundamentals of rhythm awareness.
In order to explore the concepts of polyrhythm and ensemble playing, whenever possible, the group will divide into 3 or more parts, each playing a separate rhythm.
OTHER SPECIALTY CLASSES...
We also offer: African Cooking classes, Intro to Susu or Malinké Language classes, and Mandingo Singing classes
* ALL OF OUR CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS CAN BE TAUGHT IN EITHER ENGLISH OR FRENCH
